About the Book

The survival guide every future scientist needs to navigate the opportunities, pressures, and unwritten rules of a modern scientific career.

What does it take to be a successful scientist today? As scientist and former associate dean for students Darren Lipomi explains, it's about more than excelling in lab class and developing strong technical skills. Today's scientists must adopt a flexible, entrepreneurial mindset to confront everything from social media scrapes to major shifts in funding priorities.

The Next-Generation Scientist is a timely professional development guide for navigating this hidden curriculum of modern scientific training. With the charm and candor that have made him a popular public educator, Lipomi tackles the practical realities that shape scientific success: choosing a lab, finding mentors, communicating with the public, handling conflict and rejection, adapting to AI, protecting mental health, building financial security, and managing a professional life online. Rich with actionable advice and real-world stories, The Next-Generation Scientist gives advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students the tools to thrive in their future scientific careers.
