As a guest on NBC Los Angeles’s NewsConference, Joe Mathews, co-author of California Crackup, discussed California’s history of reform, and how restrictions and mandates, intended to address the state’s broken budget and election systems, have created more problems than solutions. Mathews explained why the current system isn’t working, and his ideas for how to bring about effective change.

Mathews, who also writes for NBC’s Prop Zero blog, addressed the low voter turnout in the recent primary election: “I think it says that a lot of people have just checked out and given up….It’s possible to get elected to very high office in this state…with just a few thousand votes in districts with four hundred or five hundred thousand people.”
