This book tells the story of French actress-activist Delphine Seyrig, a consummate artist who committed her talent, grit, and renown to movements for change in France during the late 1960s and 1970s. A star and an anti-star in equal measure, Seyrig traversed multimedia and political landscapes as she engaged with the French New Wave, militant video, and women’s filmmaking, as well as the feminist and reproductive rights movements that led to the legalization of abortion in France in 1975. The first book in English to chronicle Seyrig’s artistic and cultural labor, Disobedient Muse offers a vital new critical reflection on the work of an actress-activist during turbulent times.
