WEB RESOURCE GUIDE for PARENTS, SCHOOLS, and COMMUNITIES

Welcome to the Resource Guide for stopping childhood obesity.

Childhood obesity is arguably the most pervasive and serious threat to children's health today and in the future. Its causes are numerous and interrelated: our whole society is complicit and therefore must be part of the solution. As one nurse at a national conferenceon childhood obesity put it, "It's bigger than all of us." Or as Oprah emphasized, on her show devoted to the topic, "no child is fat alone."

Forty years ago, we faced a similar epidemic: tobacco smoking. A grass-roots movement gained momentum, supported by educators, legislators, and community activists, and their multifaceted, long-term campaign dramatically reduced smoking. Such an all-out campaign is not too much to demand in the fight against childhood obesity. The long-term threat to the nation's health and security is even greater.
